The body of a missing boy has been found in the settlement of Whatatutu, near Gisborne.
Michael Mitchell, aged four, was last seen by neighbours at 3.30pm on Saturday after he visited their house in Te Whiwhi Street.
Police say the boy was well known in the town and was very comfortable wondering around visiting various houses.
Senior Sergeant Moera Brown says Michael's body was found just after midnight, in a ground-level water tank within 100 metres of his home.
The death has been referred to the coroner.
