Up to 45 jobs to go at Taranaki bakery

Workers at the a south Taranaki bakery put into receivership last month have been told that almost a third will lose their jobs.

Staff at Yarrows Family Bakers in Manaia were told on Thursday that 40 - 45 employees will lose their jobs and 100 will be kept on.

The firm supplies frozen bread dough for all Subway sandwich outlets in Australasia and East Asia, and exports to North America, the Pacific, and the United Arab Emirates

The Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) says cuts have been made across the board, including management.

The job losses had been expected from as far back as December, but still came as a shock to some workers.

Ian Turner, who is also the Central Bakers Union's head delegate, was one of the workers to lose their job.

He told Checkpoint restructuring is best because if the company goes fully into liquidation "everybody will be out".

He says there are too many charge bakers in the factory for the amount of work now being done.
