Two Porirua swimming sites fail standard

A report on beach water in the Wellington region has revealed that two swimming sites in Porirua repeatedly failed to meet a quality standard.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council says bacteria at the Porirua Harbour Rowing Club exceeded guidelines on six occasions and at Titahi Bay's south beach access road on five occasions.

The report says sewer cross-connections with the stormwater system are believed to be a contributing factor and are being investigated.

Porirua Harbour strategy coordinator Keith Calder says the results are disappointing.

He says the city council is dedicated to cleaning up the harbour and has already investigated and rectified cross-connections in the Kapiti Crescent catchment.
