Takaka high school judged major quake risk

The main teaching block of a Takaka high school has been closed after an engineers' report found it would be unsafe in an earthquake.

The 60-year-old two-storey building at the Golden Bay High School in Takaka houses eight classrooms, the staff room, toilet blocks and other amenities.

Principal Roger File says the building was closed on Friday after the Ministry of Education was shown an engineers' report commissioned by the school after the Christchurch quakes.

Mr File says the school knew some strengthening work was needed on the building, but did not expect an engineers' assessment to say it was a major quake risk.

Temporary classrooms will be installed for the start of the August school term, but in the meantime students will have to take turns studying at home, he says.
