Police say a woman thought to have suffered a gunshot wound in an incident on Friday is now believed have been bitten by a dog.
Officers went to a domestic dispute after neighbours heard shots in the township of Okato near New Plymouth about midday.
A 32-year-old man handed himself in to police about 1.30pm after Armed Offenders Squad members surrounded the property.
The man has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.
