Search for diver could take days

10:25 pm on 16 July 2011

Auckland police say it could be days before they find a diver who's been missing since Friday in Lake Pupuke on the North Shore.

The missing diver was one of a party of eight.

The company involved, Adventure Education and Helix Training says the diving party, which was in the lake on Friday afternoon - consisted of seven students and one instructor.

Two of the student divers failed to surface and the body of one, 37-year-old Tyrone North of South Auckland, was pulled from the water shortly afterwards.

The police dive squad was flown from Wellington and has been searching the lake 100 metres from the wharf at Killarney Park but police say the search is a difficult one because of the depth of the water.

The family of the missing diver kept vigil at the lake during Saturday's search and held a prayer session there.

The search will resume on Sunday morning.
