A man was killed and five others were taken to hospital after a head-on collision on State Highway 2 south of Waipawa in Hawke's Bay.
A northbound station-wagon with five people in it collided with a car heading south at 1.45am on Monday.
The sole occupant of the car died at the scene.
Two of those in the station-wagon are in a critical condition in Hawke's Bay hospital.
Police say it appears one of the vehicles crossed the centre line into the path of the other.
