Aucklanders could be able to walk and cycle across their city's Harbour Bridge in just two years' time.

The design for the $31 million project was unveiled on Sunday afternoon by Auckland Mayor Len Brown at the Wynyard Quarter on the Viaduct.

The four-metre wide pathway is planned to have a transparent enclosure allowing full views of Auckland Harbour.

There will be three observation platforms, special effects lighting, artwork and a coffee stand.

Under the plans, all users would have to pay a $2 toll to use the pathway, which will pay for the construction, maintenance and operating costs of the structure.

Even with a charge, Mr Brown expects the structure would be used by more than 800 people a day.

The Pathway Working Group, which is financing and building the structure, is seeking public feedback on the design.

Mr Brown hopes people will be walking and cycling across the Harbour Bridge by 2013.

The council is working on the project in partnership with Hopper Developments.
