Govt won't intervene in Chathams shipping

9:07 am on 25 August 2011

The Government says it won't intervene if a shipping company servicing the Chatham Islands goes out of business.

Black Robin Freighters, which ships goods to and from the islands, went into receivership almost a year ago.

The receiver, BDO Christchurch, has kept operations running while looking for a buyer.

Official papers show the Government is concerned about the potential loss of the shipping service, but does not intend to intervene and provide financial support.

Associate Transport Minister Nathan Guy says the Government is comfortable with one shipping company operating if the other goes under.

He says the issue is that there is not enough freight to sustain both companies.
