The killer of a Wellington woman beaten to death in her flat has been sentenced to to life in prison, with a minimum jail term of 17 years.

John Haerewa, 53, was arrested days after 42-year-old Alison McPhee was found dead in July 2010.

The High Court in Wellington on Tuesday heard victim impact statements read on behalf of Ms McPhee's mother and sister.

Justice France said their loss must be all the more hard to bear considering her life was taken by someone else.

He said Haerewa was a friend of Ms McPhee's before the assault at her flat, which was prolonged and brutal.

Justice France said Haerewa also made attempts to cover up the murder and delay the discovery of the body.

Outside court, Ms McPhee's father Ian said he hoped younger members of the family will ensure Haerewa is never released.
