Waikato road fatalities up compared to last year

Waikato police say they are disappointed with the district's increasing road fatalities, with four road deaths in the area in a week.

Waikato District road policing manager Inspector Leo Tooman says he is unhappy with the number of deaths on Waikato, which total 39 compared with 34 for the same period last year.

In contrast, national fatalities are down more than 20% for the same period, he says.

Inspector Tooman says despite fears about foreign drivers, with more tourists during the Rugby World Cup, his biggest concern is deaths of local people not driving to the conditions.

He says speeds are reaching ridiculous levels, with three cars clocked driving faster than 160 km/h on the nation's highways last week.
