A man at the centre of an armed stand-off with police was on Thursday under guard at Waikato Hospital.

The 42-year-old was injured during the incident at a Hamilton house on Wednesday.

The armed offenders squad were called after being told a man was involved in a domestic violence incident that had begun the night before.

Police say they had to fire tear gas into the house to gain entry and use police dogs to control the man, during which time he was injured.

Detective Sergeant Carl Moon says the man will stay in hospital until he is well enough to attend court.

He says police are also guarding a commercial site in Frankton which they believe is connected to the incident and will carry out a forensic investigation there.
