Auckland babies may get measles jab earlier

Health officials are considering vaccinating babies against measles earlier in Auckland to help combat measles amid fears of an epidemic.

Regional public health officials say the number of confirmed cases of measles rose by 28% in the past week.

There have been 157 confirmed cases of measles in Auckland since late May, with an extra 35 cases in the past week alone.

Twenty-nine people are in quarantine - up from three last week - and 23 people have needed hospital care.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service says most recent cases occurred in central Auckland - rather than in the west where the outbreak began.

Auckland medical officer of health Richard Hoskins it is beginning to look like an epidemic.

Dr Hoskins says they are deeply concerned and are considering bringing forward the first dose of the MMR vaccine from 15 months to one-year-olds, along with other steps.

Passengers may have been exposed

People on two flights between Auckland and Wellington this month may have been exposed to measles.

Dr Hoskins says there was a person with measles on Jetstar JQ265 on Tuesday 13 September and one on Air New Zealand 446 on Thursday 15 September.

He says others who lack immunity - and even those who've been immunised - should look out for symptoms such as fever, watery eyes, runny nose, mouth spots and a rash.

Health authorities say any passengers on those flights who have symptoms of measles should immediately see their family doctor or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Confirmed case in Canterbury

A student in her 20s who became unwell last week is the first confirmed case of measles in Canterbury since February.

A Canterbury medical officer of health, Ramon Pink, says the student, who's believed to have been vaccinated against measles, visited Auckland recently.

He says she had been in contact while infectious with others at Canterbury University and in Riccarton.

Canterbury health authorities are working on contacting all the people who've been in touch with her.
