Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell says there has been a lack of communication between the officials handling the Rena oil slick operation and local Maori.
He attended a meeting on Motiti Island, which is about 7km from the ship which ran aground on the Astrolabe reef on Wednesday.
Mr Flavell says the iwi are concerned about the effect the oil will have on the seafood many of them rely on, and want to be consulted about things affecting their area.
He says another meeting will be held with iwi on Monday night to further discuss their concerns.
