A group of surfers say plans by Port Otago to dump dredge sediment near Aramoana spit could spoil the area's world-famous surf break.
Port Otago has confirmed it plans to dredge to widen and deepen the harbour to accommodate shipping.
Waste from the dredging would be dumped at Taiaroa Heads, opposite the Aramoana spit.
A local spokesperson for the Surfbreak Protection Society, Nic Reeves, says that could significantly affect the surf break at Aramoana, and the sediment should instead be dumped out at sea.
