Two people who survived a light plane crash in Arrowtown on Monday are in a stable condition in Dunedin hospital.

A woman in her 60s and a man in his 30s were pulled from the wreckage of the Cessna 172 and were airlifted to Dunedin.

Ian Sloan, 59, the owner of the plane, died at the scene.

Witnesses say the plane appeared to be coming in to land on a small airstrip near the Arrowtown golf course.

The plane crashed into a gully on the course after it appeared to clip trees.

Civil Aviation Authority inspectors are expected in Arrowtown on Tuesday to investigate.
