Government questions long-term Auckland plan

10:07 am on 20 October 2011

The Government doubts the ability of Auckland Council to keep much of the region's future population growth within existing urban areas.

In its formal response to a draft of a plan for the next 30 years, the Govenment has asked the council to explain how it would deliver the compact growth concept at the heart of its development blueprint.

The council wants to house almost 1 million additional residents in more intensively-developed suburbs and in rural satellite towns.

The Government suggests there be more work with the private sector to see whether the objectives can be met and it wants more certainty about the plan's implementation.
