Fire crews remain at scene of factory blaze

12:18 pm on 1 November 2011

The Fire Service says it has brought a fire at a packaging factory in Hastings under control.

Fire crews began fighting the blaze at the Hawk Packaging factory on Tomoana Road about 11.15pm on Sunday.

Some 50 staff with eight fire trucks were still at the scene on Monday morning.

The fire service says the fire was in a recycled paper storage facility at the factory that makes egg cartons and moulded trays for apple boxes.

It says the fire was contained by Monday morning to bales of recycled paper which needed to be individually broken open and doused with water to be fully extinguished.

Assistant area manager Ken Cooper says the fire crews managed to prevent the fire spreading to the rest of the packaging facility.

The fire service expects it will take the rest of the day to put the fire out completely.

Hawk Packaging financial controller Mike Sanko says firefighters did a magnificent job preventing the blaze spreading to other buildings.

He says 80% of the site is unaffected.

Mr Sanko says the fire will have only a limited impact on production and the factory will be back operating soon.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
