Finalists chosen as alternatives to Wellywood sign

Updated at 8:28 am on 7 November 2011

Two designs have been selected to compete with the proposed Wellywood sign on Miramar cutting in Wellington.

An online poll which closed at midnight on Sunday attracted more than 18,000 votes on the alternatives to the controversial Hollywood-style sign.

A proposed sign entitled "Wellington - Blown Away" was the clear winner with 46% of the votes.

"The Eye of the Taniwha" was the second most popular, with 21% of votes.

The "Blown Away" sign was designed by advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi and depicts the word Wellington with the last few letters blowing across the hill.

A final vote in which people can choose between either of the two finalists or the original Wellywood sign will open on Wednesday and close on 17 November.

A final decision will be announced two days later.
