Updated at 6:45 am on 4 December 2011

The University of Canterbury has appointed a former top diplomat as its next chancellor.

The university announced on Friday afternoon that Dr John Wood, a former New Zealand ambassador to the United States who has been its pro-chancellor since 2008, will take up the role in the new year.

Dr Wood was also a principal external trade and economic adviser and negotiator under successive governments.

He is a Treaty of Waitangi negotiator for Ngai Tuhoe and for the Whanganui River negotiations.

The principal of Christchurch Boys High School, Trevor McIntyre, has been appointed to replace Dr Wood as pro-chancellor.
