Police in Wellington are investigating a serious assault in the central city.
They say a man in his early forties left work on the Terrace at 5.30am on Saturday to head down Boulcott Street.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Miller says when he was halfway down the street, outside the Baptist Church, an altercation has taken place.
The man is in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit after undergoing surgery.
Police want to hear from anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area between 5:30am and 6:15am.
