Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby is confident Maritime New Zealand is ready to respond if any more oil spills from the Rena.
The ship has been pounded this weekend by heavy swells.
Maritime New Zealand says very little is holding the wreck together and oil may spill from a duct that runs the length of the vessel.
Mr Crosby says heavy weather could help break up any oil that escapes.
He says he's confident that if any oil does reach the shore, it will be cleaned up promptly by Maritime New Zealand.
