A search and rescue is under way in Upper Hutt for a missing Whitby man.

Vaughn Solomon headed out on the Puffer Track into the Tauherenikau Valley on Monday, but failed to return home that night.

About 20 police and Land Search and Rescue volunteers are searching for him, with the search focused on the lower Tararua area.

Acting sergeant Anthony Harmer of Wellington police says Mr Solomon is believed to be fit and able and reasonably familiar with the area.

He is described as a Caucasian male who is about 1.8 metres tall, of solid build and with light brown or blonde hair.

He is likely to be wearing some army-styled clothing and tramping boots.
