Review backs demolition decision

A review of Auckland Council's decision to approve the demolition of a 19th century cottage has found the council acted properly.

Heritage campaigners were outraged that the council had overturned a ruling from one of its own advisors.

The heritage advisor had recommended a demolition request be declined but the council then brought in an external consulant, who found in favour of the applicant.

The council has conducted an external and internal review into the resource consent decision and says the decision was not flawed and the cottage is not a heritage building.

The owner of the vacant Paget Street cottage in Freemans Bay plans to build a new house on the site.
