Moderate quake hits upper South Island

A moderate earthquake hit parts of the upper South Island on Sunday.

It was magnitude 4.5 and was about nine kilometres deep.

The quake struck at 11.56am and was centred 30 kilometres south-east of Murchison.

Residents described it as a rolling motion that caused some anxiety but there have been no reports of damage.
