Warning stranger offering Waikanae children rides

1:07 pm on 11 February 2012

Police in Waikanae are urging parents to call 111 urgently if their child is approached by a man offering a ride in his car.

Over the past three weeks, four children aged between seven and 14 have reported being approached either at 8.30am or at 3pm when school gets out.

The latest incident occurred on Friday involving a seven-year-old boy.

Children have described the man as a tall, thin Pakeha, possibly aged about 40, with dark curly hair and round glasses. He was driving a white four-door sedan.

Sergeant Jackie Muir is asking parents to press home to children the message about stranger danger.

If children are approached by anyone they don't know, they should run away and tell the first adult they find and then quickly contact police, she says.

Patrols have been stepped up from central Waikanae to Waikanae Beach on the Kapiti Coast.
