The detective leading the investigation into the murder of a Christchurch pensioner, killed with a cricket bat by his de facto stepson, has welcomed the 25-year-old 's guilty plea.

Christopher Glenn Gleeson has appeared at a sitting of Christchurch District Court, at the city's men's prison, and entered a guilty plea for the murder of Kenneth John Moore.

The 65-year-old was found in his home in the Christchurch suburb of Waltham on 8 January but police believe he was murdered in the house days earlier after returning from a family gathering.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Murton says the case against Gleeson was overwhelming.

He says Gleeson's crime was a violent one and it was a tragedy for Mr Moore's family.

Gleeson will be sentenced next month.
