Reports of Rena debris on Great Barrier Island

5:38 am on 28 April 2012

The company responsible for cleaning up debris from the Rena says it is investigating reports some has washed up on Great Barrier Island.

Braemar Howells, involved in the clean up since the Rena ran aground on Astrolabe Reef off the coast of Tauranga on 5 October last year, says wheelbarrow parts and plastic beads have been seen washing up on Great Barrier Island.

However, poor weather conditions on Friday delayed a flyover survey until the weekend.

Meanwhile, back at the wreck, divers are cutting into the submerged stern section to remove more containers.
