The Rena's navigation officer has appeared in the Tauranga District Court
The 37-year-old Filipino is charged with operating a vessel in a manner causing unnecessary danger or risk.
He has been remanded on bail without plea and given name suppression because of concerns expressed by his lawyer about his safety.
Judge Robert Wolff said he accepted there is genuine concern for the man's safety, not from right-thinking members of the public but from a small section of less rational and less restrained people.
The Rena's master appeared on the same charge in the same court on Wednesday, and was also bailed with name suppression.
The second officer isn't allowed to associate with the master unless he has to help out with the salvage operation.
