Worries about fishing ban

6:29 am on 19 October 2011

Some fishing businesses in Bay of Plenty say they will go bust if a fishing ban around the stricken container ship Rena is not lifted.

Representatives from the fishing industry have asked the Government to remove, or reduce the exclusion zone, so they can continue to operate.

The Tauranga Chamber of Commerce says the Prime Minister told them that a decision to remove the exclusion zone would have to come from Maritime New Zealand.

Deep Star Charters owner Kenneth Garth-Lelievre says many people have already cancelled bookings with his company, even into the start of December.
