5:26 pm on 6 November 2011

Volunteers were on Sunday taking part in the 100th beach clean-up, since the container ship Rena went aground on 5 October.

Maritime New Zealand says 107 volunteers took part in the clean up to remove oil from the sand at Papamoa Beach on Sunday morning and another 40 volunteers turned out at Maketu and there were 12 at Te Tumu.

More than 4000 registered volunteers have taken part in the clean-up so far.

Another 4000 have offered to help.
