Pumping continues in good weather

9:03 am on 12 November 2011

Pumping of heavy fuel oil from a submerged starboard tank continues aboard the container ship Rena, which is stranded off the coast at Tauranga.

Maritime New Zealand says the flow rate has been steady at about four tonnes of oil per hour.

Salvage unit manager Arthur Jobard says the team has also been removing the last remnants of lubricating oil, along with emptying the storage tanks.

Clear, calm conditions are helping salvage efforts, with good weather forecast until Wednesday with only minimal swells and light winds.
