Native flowers to feature in fireworks display

4:06 pm on 9 September 2011

Fireworks designed to look like pohutakawa and kowhai flowers, nikau palms, ponga trees and kiwi will feature in the opening display at the Rugby World Cup.

Martin van Tiel from Van Tiel Pyrotechnics told Morning Report that 6000 star shells and another 1000 effects will be set off from the Sky Tower, four other buildings and from the Auckland Domain, starting at 8pm on Friday.

He said the 3.5 tonnes of fireworks will be visible from as far away as the Bombay Hills.

Mr van Tiel said the weather is perfect and spectators are in for a treat. The display will last 12 minutes.
