Comment: Can we win it this time?

Radio New Zealand rugby reporter Barry Guy is surprised how little talk there is about the World Cup.

There has been plenty of talk about the World Cup from those who are trying to make some money from it - but from the rest of the people I associate with, it's been rather quiet.

The performances of the All Blacks is always a talking point: win or lose, and who should or shouldn't be playing.

But mention rugby or the World Cup at the moment and most are biting their lips and almost avoiding the big question - can we win it this time?

Winning the inaugural tournament in 1987 set our expectations high, but there have been five tournaments since and nothing to show for it.

I don't even get asked if we're going to win. Instead it's just questions like: Who should start at halfback? Will the All Blacks rein in their expansive game? Is Robbie Deans going to ruin our party?

Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm not in the loop. However, I do have a new attitude that could be putting a few off.

''What will be will be'' and no matter what I think or say, its not going to change the outcome of a game. But for many years I thought it was me jinxing results.

In every tournament since 1987 I've said ''yes we will win'' and ''well we haven't.'' I'm not going to make that mistake again.

I know we're quite a reserved group of people who keep a lot of our emotions inside, and perhaps we are a bit gun shy from previous disappointments.

However, I'm sure the hype and excitement will start to show as the tournament kicks into action.

The British and Irish Lions tour of 2005 was one of the best things that has happened to New Zealand and New Zealand rugby in recent times and I'm sure the 2011 Rugby World Cup will do the same.

So relax, don't worry about the results, enjoy the event and make sure you're in the party.

And will the All Blacks win? Yeah - why not.
