Huge local TV audience for Cup opener

One of the biggest ever New Zealand television audiences tuned in for the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony and rugby match on Friday night.

Figures show the event attracted a viewership of just over 1.6 million people.

Rugby New Zealand 2011 chief executive, Martin Sneddon says the figure is incredible, especially considering the country's total television audience is 1.9 million viewers.

He says an additional 260,000 people were also either at the New Zealand Tonga game, or attending events in Central Auckland.
