No excuses - Deans

6:37 am on 18 September 2011

Australia rugby coach Robbie Deans is offering no excuses for the Wallabies' surprise defeat by Ireland by 15-6 in their Rugby World Cup pool match on Saturday night in Auckland.

Deans says Ireland played more intelligently and put his side under pressure.

''We were outplayed," he said afterwards. ''It doesn't really matter what elements you put it down to, we came here to play and to win and we came second.

''It was a very good Irish performance and they fully deserved their win," he added.

''The Irish gave us difficulty across the board. The Irish played more intelligently, they put us under pressure and profited from that, particularly in our area of the ground,'' said Deans.

The defeat means Australia are almost certain to be in the same half of the draw as defending champions South Africa and New Zealand in the knockout stages.
