Opening night problems show importance of rail - Mayor

11:07 am on 18 September 2011

Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the problems on the trains to the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony on 9 September, illustrate how important a new rail system is for the city.

Overcrowding and delays on trains, meant an estimated 2000 people missed the opening ceremony and the first game at Eden Park.

Mr Brown is dedicated to the building of a $2.4 billion central city rail loop over the next seven years.

He told the Q + A programme on TVNZ that system would have been able to cope with the number of people wanting to use rail during the Rugby World Cup.

Mr Brown said he is now even more determined to see the rail system built.
