Cup accommodation bookings lower than expected

Hospitality New Zealand says Rugby World Cup accommodation may be down on what was initially expected, but it will increase as the tournament progresses.

President Adam Cunningham says there are signs the early stages are quieter than expected, but the industry was always aware bookings would grow as momentum picked up.

Mr Cunningham says high-end travellers will have made bookings in advance, so top-end hotels will probably not see many more guests if they are not yet booked.

But the New Zealand Hotel Council says a number of hotels have had fewer visitors than normal during recent weeks, because of a misconception that hotels are more expensive or fully booked.
