Wales go on scoring spree against Namibia

10:33 pm on 26 September 2011

Inside centre Scott Williams scored a hat-trick of tries as Wales trounced Namibia 81-7 in their Rugby World Cup match on Monday to move within sight of the quarterfinals.

Replacement winger George North added two tries in New Plymouth, with Aled Brew, Toby Faletau, Gethin Jenkins, Jonathan Davies and Lloyd Williams, Lee Byrne and Alun Wyn Jones also crossing for Wales as they notched up their highest score at the tournament.

First five-eighth Stephen Jones became the most-capped player for Wales with his 101st appearance and slotted 15 points with the boot with six conversions and a penalty before being replaced by Rhys Priestland, Reuters reports.

Namibia lock Heinz Koll sprinted 45 metres for his second try of the tournament, which first five-eighth Theuns Kotze converted to give the underdogs something to cheer about at Stadium Taranaki.

"They came at us and blew us away and we couldn't stop them," Namibia captain Jacques Burger said after the match. "We played against a good side ... it was tough. It's the end of the World Cup for us."

The bonus point victory gives Wales the edge in their battle with Samoa to secure second place in Pool D.

Samoa need to beat defending champions South Africa in Auckland on Friday to have any chance of making the quarterfinals, while Wales will take on Fiji in Hamilton on Sunday.
