Taylor optimistic All Blacks can win without Carter

A former All Black says Dan Carter's exit from the Rugby World Cup due to injury will not stop the team from winning because the All Blacks faced a similar situation in the 1987 event and still managed to win.

Carter tore a tendon in his groin during kicking practice on Saturday. He might need surgery and recovery could take up to three months.

Warwick Taylor, who was part of the Cup winning side in 1987, says the loss of captain Andy Dalton in the early stages of the tournament did not stop them going on to win the final.

While the loss of Carter is a big blow, he says it's a great opportunity for his replacement, Colin Slade, 23, to prove himself.

Carter's injury has forced the TAB to re-evaluate its odds of New Zealand winning the final, with the payout increasing from $1.50 to $1.70.
