Dunedin's World Cup fan zone closes early

7:16 pm on 12 October 2011

Dunedin's Rugby World Cup fan zone will not be open for the semi-finals or grand final matches.

The licensed venue at the Town Hall was set up to cope with the estimated 10,000 England fans in town for the South Island city's first three pool matches at Otago Stadium.

Two weeks ago, the fan zone's duration was extended so it could be open to the end of the World Cup finals.

But Dunedin Venues chief executive David Davies says he has decided to close the fan zone early because most international visitors have already left the city for the North Island.

Mr Davies says there were occasions when the fan zone was full, but the support was not across the board.

He is sure bars in the city's central Octagon area will have plenty of space for fans wanting to watch the final matches.
