Auckland City Hospital processed a record number of emergency patients on Monday.

Since midnight, 164 patients so far have gone through the adult emergency department with mostly alcohol-related injuries or illness.

Auckland District Health Board says the number is on its way to surpassing the record set on the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup, when the hospital attended to 380 patients.

The DHB expects more than that by the end of Monday night.
