The newest entrant to the dairy industry has taken the first step to doing business in India, which is the world's largest milk producer.

Miraka Ltd began whole milk powder production last August at its plant north west of Taupo.

It is the first Maori majority owned and controlled dairy company.

A director, John Paki, was among a group of Maori business people, academics and artists who have just attended an international cultural conference in India, as well as exploring business opportunities.

He says a meeting with the Gopalgee Group south of New Delhi, which has extensive dairy interests, resulted in the signing of a memorandum of understanding.
