NZ urged to share irrigation technology

An international water expert says New Zealand has a responsibility to share its irrigation technology with other countries, as the global demand for food grows.

Professor Torkil Jonch Clausen from the Technical University of Denmark told Irrigation New Zealand's annual conference in Timaru that one billion people still go to bed hungry, and two billion people do not have access to clean water.

Professor Clausen said water is linked to food and energy security, and countries rich in the resource need to work together to solve the global food shortage.

He said New Zealand has an obligation to do so.
