Eleven years of careful breeding to produce ultra-fine merino wool have reached fruition for an Otago farming family.
Tony and Rebecca Clarke, of Closeburn Station, in the Maniototo district, are signing a memorandum of partnership on Thursday to supply their wool to Konaka Co, a corporate wear manufacturer and retailer in Japan.
The company will use the 15-micron merino wool to replace cashmere in a new range of winter garments.
The deal was brokered by wool exporter, H. Dawson.
Senior international sales manager Craig Smith saw the opportunity to match the needs of the Japanese company with a supply of fine wool.
He says the story of where the wool comes from, is also important to the Konaka company and it will be using that in its advertising programme.
