Northland, it seems, is the place to go for the best steak this year.
Pipiwai farmer Alex Macmillan has been named grand champion in the annual Steak of Origin contest for producing the tastiest and most tender sirloin steak.
The winning steak came from the Hinterwald breed, an old type of cattle from Germany's Black Forest region.
The Hinterwald is raised for beef and milk production and is the smallest cattle breed in central Europe.
Northland farming couple Chris and Karren Biddles from Te Atarangi Angus at Te Kopuru have been awarded the Producer of the Decade title, marking the 10th year of the contest.
Also awarded at the national Beef Expo in Feilding on Monday night was the Brand of the Decade, which went to AngusPure, and the Retailer/Wholesaler of the Decade, awarded to Neat Meat of Auckland, which also won the Supreme Brand Award for this year.
