Maori farming winner aims to inspire

Updated at 11:58 am on 12 June 2012

A young Southland dairy farmer who's won a Maori farming award hopes his success will help to attract his peers to the industry.

Tangaroa Walker, 22, is the first winner of the Ahuwhenua Maori Excellence in Farming competition's new cadet trainee award.

He is a lower-order share milker on a Kennington dairy farm and employs three staff.

He hopes his win will encourage young workers to consider a career in the dairy industry.

The Ahuwhenua Trophy, the premier award for Maori farmers, was won by the Kapenga M Trust in Rotorua.
