Gisborne farmers signal need for drought assistance

8:29 pm on 13 April 2009

Farmers around Gisborne say they may need special government assistance because of drought.

This would take the form of an income equalisation scheme, which eases tax burdens from one year to another.

Federated Farmers says the drought is patchy, and is mainly in parts of Gisborne, Mahia and some regions inland from Wairoa.

A lot of hilltops have no proper grass cover and farmers are worried about the availability of feed for sheep and cattle as the region heads into winter.

Provincial president Hamish Cave says Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry officials are preparing a report to take to Cabinet.
