New technology to detect illness early

AgResearch is adapting an infra-red camera to help in the early detection of animal illnesses and injuries.

The Crown Research Institute had the new technology on display at the National Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek last week.

Scientist Jim Webster says it works by zoning-in on an increase in temperature which indicates that the animal is unwell.

He says it could be mounted in the cow shed or on a water trough. An electronic id in the animal's ear triggers the camera.

He plans to have the camera software available for purchase within a few years.
