Milk for schools programme to go national

Fonterra has confirmed that its milk for schools programme looks set to be rolled out nationally next year after its trial in Northland primary schools.

The company started delivering low-fat milk to about 10,500 school children in more than 100 northern schools earlier this year, as part of its aim to make milk more affordable and accessible, following public criticism of the price of milk.

Chief executive Theo Spierings said last week that the pilot programme has been a success.

He said milk will go to between 240,000 - 250,000 children if the programme is rolled out nationally.

Mr Spierings also said Fonterra's move in freezing the price of milk supplied to retailers last year had boosted sales and its Takanini processing plant has had to increase its output by 35,000 litres per day to meet demand.
